Design of two-phase participatory exhibition, gallery layout, graphic design, labels, and fabrication.

Eight paintings that had been tucked away for years in DIA storage were chosen for conservation and further study. Research unearthed fascinating new information, but only a small sliver of it could appear on a label when each painting went on exhibit. In this vanguard exhibition, visitors were invited to decide what stories to tell about the paintings in the exhibition, by voting with colorful mini-pompoms. After the votes were tallied, Hidden Treasures reopened as a regular exhibition with labels featuring the winning stories.

The Daring Adventures of Alaska’s Pioneer Pilots
Valdez Museum and Historical Archive, 2012

Research, design, custom interactive multimedia, graphic design, label design, fabrication and installation.

Air travel has long been an essential mode of transportation for Alaskan towns and Alaskan bush aviation in the early 20th century is legendary. Valdez, being as far north as you can get and still have a shipping port that doesn’t freeze, was home to many famous pioneer bush pilots such as Bob Reeve, Owen Meals, and Bill Egan. The exhibition, The Daring Adventures of Alaska’s Pioneer Pilots, at the Valdez Museum highlights the many stories, places and people related to local aviation. Displaying photographs, relics and motion pictures, the exhibition brings the exploits of Alaska’s early bush pilots to life.
