Science Gallery Detroit, 2019

Exhibition consultation, planning, design, and installation

Science Gallery Detroit, North America’s first and only Science Gallery, opened its second annual exhibition in 2019 at the Michigan Science Center in Detroit. Flutter & Wow produced Science Gallery Detroit’s inaugural show, HUSTLE, and we are proud to have returned to design and produce the second show: DEPTH, featuring twice as many exhibits.

DEPTH “weaves a narrative, drawn from scientific research and artistic exploration, that invites visitors to consider how we can value the power of water, understand why it brings us joy and life, stop our abuse of it, and wonder about the undiscovered and unknown.”

The multimedia exhibition invites visitors to explore our complex connection to water through works that use bold visual elements, dramatic video, audio, and lighting, interactive elements and participatory experiences. Works on exhibit for DEPTH have been created by artists and researchers from both Detroit and around the world.

Experience DEPTH for yourself at the Michigan Science Center, 5020 John R St, Detroit, MI through August 17, 2019.

Walter P. Reuther Library, Wayne State University, 2019

Exhibition planning, design, fabrication and installation

Leonard Woodcock started his career as a machinist in Detroit. Known for his master negotiating skills, he became the UAW President and eventually, the U.S. Ambassador to China under President Carter. Throughout his career, Woodcock remained active in the Civil Rights Movement, Detroit affairs, and Wayne State University.

Flutter & Wow designed this wall in Woodcock’s honor for the Wayne State University Walter P. Reuther Library, where he was also very active. Bold graphics and a combination of vinyl and pvc prints, along with wood framing make the wall stand out and to highlight Woodcock’s character and achievements.

Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm, 2019

Museum master planning, exhibition consultation, design, fabrication and installation

Phase I of a complete gallery redesign for the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm.

The story of the Taylor-Van Hoosen family, who lived on this farm for several generations, is one about chasing dreams and making history. Flutter & Wow’s job was to make sure visitors of all ages and abilities can learn something about the place and the people while also engaging in and enjoying their gallery experience. Some of our solutions were to use bold and vibrant graphics and to include a variety of fun, interactive exhibits.

In the newly designed gallery space, visitors will find interactive social media-like feeds, a family travels theater, electronic quiz boards, lift-the-flap panels, oversized wooden puzzle pieces, and push button interactives.

Flutter & Wow is excited to have a role in the exhibit design, installation, and production of Science Gallery Lab’s first exhibition in Detroit, Hustle. This exhibition brings the work of artists from around the world to the center of Detroit to showcase the art of the hustle. “All forms of hustle involve art, science, or a combination of both. Hustle is a multimedia exhibition of interactive works and participatory experiences that examine the many definitions of survival and success.”

Works include VR, bio-specimens, hustling ants, language, mixed media, robotics, and other interactive and visual exhibits that in one form or another, represent the Hustle.

This exhibition ran June through August, 2018 at 1001 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI.

University of Michigan Research Museums Center, 2018

Exhibition consultation, planning, design, and installation

From local salmon specimens to impala, water buffalo, reindeer, warthog, and many more, the University of Michigan’s Research Museums Center now boasts sixty stunning taxidermy mounts throughout its hallways. Donated to the university by a single collector, these mounts were previously housed in the Ruthven Building, but found their way into storage when the building closed for renovations in 2016. When it was determined that the mounts would find a new home in the recently opened, state-of-the-art Research Museums Center, Flutter & Wow was tasked with designing the spatial layout of the specimens and the exhibit labels. What a cool learning experience for our team, and for those who walk the halls.

Ford Piquette Avenue Plant, Detroit, 2017

Exhibition design, fabrication and installation

Located in the Milwaukee Junction area of Detroit, the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant Museum was Henry Ford’s headquarters, prior to his advent of the assembly line, and now features showrooms of beautifully conserved classic cars, mostly from that earliest period of the automobile. “The Secret Experimental Room: Birthplace of the Model T” is a historical recreation of the third-storey laboratory where Ford and his hand-selected crack team of engineers and machinists created the car that changed the world.  Flutter & Wow created some of the components for the exhibition, including illuminated reader rails; period-matching furniture, barricade and design details; and other custom designed exhibits to incorporate antique drafting table parts.

Pictured is the work of John Akomfrah, whose three screen documentary highlights the work of cultural theorist Stuart Hall, who devoted his life to studying the interweaving threads of culture, power, politics, and identity.
