Ford Piquette Avenue Plant, Detroit, 2017

Exhibition design, fabrication and installation

Located in the Milwaukee Junction area of Detroit, the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant Museum was Henry Ford’s headquarters, prior to his advent of the assembly line, and now features showrooms of beautifully conserved classic cars, mostly from that earliest period of the automobile. “The Secret Experimental Room: Birthplace of the Model T” is a historical recreation of the third-storey laboratory where Ford and his hand-selected crack team of engineers and machinists created the car that changed the world.  Flutter & Wow created some of the components for the exhibition, including illuminated reader rails; period-matching furniture, barricade and design details; and other custom designed exhibits to incorporate antique drafting table parts.

Pictured is the work of John Akomfrah, whose three screen documentary highlights the work of cultural theorist Stuart Hall, who devoted his life to studying the interweaving threads of culture, power, politics, and identity.
